Urushiol is the oil found in poison ivy, oak, sumac and related plants that is responsible for the nasty allergic reaction. Once the oil touches your skin, there is a small window of time (anywhere from 10 minutes to two hours) in which you can wash off the oil with regular soap and water before it absorbs and adheres to your skin. Once this happens, regular soap and water are no longer effective. Left untreated, an allergic reaction may likely result. After a breakout occurs, there is a host of traditional treatments, from homemade remedies to over-the-counter products, such as calamine lotion or hydrocortisone, which temporarily suppress the itch but do nothing to remove urushiol. For severe cases in which the rash covers more than 10% of the body, prescription steroids are the best solution.
